The University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD) is a public university in Vila Real, Portugal. It is described as the largest centre for the creation and diffusion of knowledge in the interior north of Portugal, working closely with other universities in the country, Europe and the world, as well as with the institutional and business fabric. UTAD was born as an agrarian Polytechnic Institute in 1973 and grew into a university. It transformed an old farm into a campus including one of the largest botanical gardens in Europe. Its strategic vision for 2017/2021 was to build an eco-university. Governance includes a Rector elected by the General Council, with schools, research units, academic and pedagogical councils and student representation. The campus has modern facilities, libraries, laboratories, a veterinary hospital, sports equipment, online services, and cultural opportunities. Its schools include Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, Sciences and Technologies, and Life and Environmental Sciences. The academic calendar runs from September to December and February to May, with evaluations in January, June and July.
