The Hashemite University (HU) is a governmental university in Jordan established by Royal Decree in 1991. It lies 25 km northeast of Amman, near a major international highway and next to the country's largest free-trade zone. In 1995, HU opened with three academic colleges and 600 students. It now has 15 faculties, offering 56 undergraduate and 42 graduate programmes, and 230 laboratories equipped with modern technology. The campus can accommodate about 30,000 students, and it has produced 95,000 graduates. The university promotes renewable energy, including a 5 MWp grid-connected solar project that supplies more than 8 GWh annually and avoids over 3,700 tons of CO2 emissions. It also runs a National Seed Bank and a brackish water desalination plant producing 83 cubic metres per hour.
