Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is a research-focused university that says its strength in research is a precondition for international competitiveness. It is world-leading in particle physics through the PRISMA++ Cluster of Excellence, and also relevant in materials sciences, quantum and atomic physics, sustainable chemistry, polymer chemistry, life sciences and translational medicine. JGU's profile is supported by the Gutenberg Research College. In the German federal and state Excellence Strategy, JGU is applying as part of the Rhine-Main Universities alliance; in November 2025 it submitted a joint proposal with Goethe University Frankfurt and TU Darmstadt called 'RMU-EXCITE'. Five RMU cluster projects were approved for funding from 2026, including PRISMA++.
