The Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) Varanasi, commonly known as IIT (BHU), has its roots in engineering education at Banaras Hindu University. Engineering education began in 1919 with the establishment of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO), followed by the College of Technology (TECHNO) and the College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET). In 1968, these colleges were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU), which admitted students through the IIT Joint Entrance Examination since 1972. IT-BHU became IIT (BHU) Varanasi on June 29, 2012, by an Act of Parliament. The institute completed 100 years in 2019. It aims to develop engineers, scientists, doctors, merchants, and theologians of high character and probity. The institute is committed to nation building, innovation, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and making graduates agents of transformative change.
